The little lad was sitting all alone that summer day and he felt a little blue and sad; “If I only had a friend, another boy, with whom to play and to talk to, I would be so glad.” He sighed, his heart was heavy, though the day was bright and clear, and he rose and walked with drooping head; Then he saw, beneath a shade tree, several men; as he drew near, one, a teacher, smiled at him and said, “Come here, my child.” With wonder at the kindness in His face, the lad shyly walked up to the Man; With another smile, the Teacher gave the lad a warm embrace and again His teaching He began. “If ye become as children then the kingdom is at hand.” And He taught to them humility; The lad, in awesome wonder, though he did not understand, whispered softly, gladly, “He loves me.” Long weeks passed by, but never did the lad forget his Friend and the kindness He had shown to him; With yearning heart he whispered as each day came to an end, “Oh, I long to see my Friend again. ”One day in desperation the young lad made up his mind, “I will go and seek Him everywhere.” He questioned every stranger, “Have you seen my Friend? He’s kind.” Never once he gave in to despair. Along the dusty roadways every day he traveled on, always asking for his kindly Friend. With weariness at sunset he would rest, but with the dawn he would rise and journey on again. One day he reached a hillside where three crosses touched the skies, and his heart was broken at the view; He stood there in amazement with tears streaming from his eyes, “Oh, my Friend, what have they done to You?”
